A Gilded Age Mansion in Newport Is on the Market for $28.5 Million
At 43,772 square feet, Seaview Terrace is one of the largest private estates in the U.S.
A sprawling Gilded Age mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, has hit the market for a stupendous $28.5 million. Known as Seaview Terrace, the 43,772-square-foot property was built in 1925 and features 29 bedrooms and 18 baths. In addition to being one of the largest private homes in the U.S., this property is one of the last privately-owned Gilded Age mansions in Newport.
“With many of Newport’s Gilded Age mansions preserved as museums, Seaview stands out as one of the last opportunities to privately own a landmark in the Bellevue Avenue and Cliff Walk neighborhood, an area that continues to attract some of the world’s wealthiest buyers,” says Marielle Clair, listing agent and co-owner of STAY Newport, a division of RI Properties. .
“Steve Schwarzman of the Blackstone Group restored Miramar, Larry Ellison of Oracle acquired Beechwood Mansion and has since undertaken a $100-million-plus restoration, and Nicolas Schorsch purchased Hopedene along the Cliff Walk,” adds Clair. “Their presence underscores Newport’s appeal as a long-term wealth preservation investment opportunity.”
Situated on 7.76 acres, Seaview Terrace is located at 207 Ruggles Avenue. Design highlights include 40-foot-high ceilings, Venetian frescoes dating back to 1840, a 6,000-square-foot historic gatehouse, expansive ballrooms, galleries with museum-worthy artwork, and 22 stained glass panels documented by the Corpus Vitrearum, a scholarly organization that analyzes and researches historic stained glass in the U.S.
“What makes Seaview especially unique,” adds Clair, “is its scale and status. It is the largest privately held property in Newport, the city’s third-largest mansion overall, and one of the last still in private hands. While The Breakers, Rosecliff, and Ochre Court are open to the public, Seaview offers the chance to steward a landmark as a private residence.”
