Geoffrey De Sousa Crafts a Room Around a Dalton Gata Artwork
A mysterious painting sparks the designer and De Sousa Hughes cofounder to design a room with sculptural shapes and accents of pink
Geoffrey De Sousa may be a self-proclaimed modernist, but when it comes to his finished living spaces, he delivers designs that are livable, comfortable, and decidedly not hard-edged. So when he imagined a room to complement a surreal work by rising-star Dalton Gata, he gravitated toward a blend of impactful furnishings with curvy shapes.
“The feminine forms I chose speak to the painting’s stylish subjects and the flashes of optimistic pink,” explains De Sousa. “I want the pieces to stand on their own and be kind of unexpected. I like that there’s some tension between them.” That same perfect mix comes across at De Sousa Hughes, his design showroom in San Francisco, which is naturally just as welcoming as his interiors.
“I’m much more about people expressing who they are and their creativity than I am about making it all look right”
