Embarking on a career in a creative field requires a huge leap of faith. There’s no clear road map to making it big. Even extraordinary talent doesn’t always net success, although it certainly helps (as does unwavering confidence, a unique vision, and support from like-minded communities). It has always been part of Galerie’s DNA to shine a light on inspiring artists and artisans with remarkable gifts, and in this issue, we spotlight ones in the fields of art, interior design, and jewelry.

For our annual list of emerging artists to watch (“Next Big Things”), we tapped a jury of luminaries, including artist Julie Mehretu, chief artistic officer and global director of Art Basel Fairs Vincenzo de Bellis, collector Komal Shah, and architect Kulapat Yantrasast. Their choices showcase 15 rising stars working in a wide range of mediums, each with a singular style. Take, for example, painter Jennifer J. Lee, who presents startling photorealistic yet pixelated paintings of everyday objects—from plaid skirts to tennis balls—on small jute canvases that compel the viewer to take a closer look.

We also explore the practices of six interior design firms that are conjuring
mesmerizing spaces that set the stage for how people want to live today. As one of
the principals of the bicoastal studio BOND, Noam Dvir shares, “it’s all about crafting an idea and a narrative for the project.” Even the up-and-coming jewelers profiled are about teasing out personal tales before translating them into dazzling displays of carats and craftsmanship. As Kia Schwaninger, whose recent collection centers on fanciful color combinations, explains, “I love meeting with clients, hearing their stories.”

Just as exciting as it is to profile these talents, it’s also a treat to see the spaces
they inhabit. On the cover, interior designer Elizabeth Stanley welcomes us into
her family’s cozy-chic home in Aspen, Colorado. Plus, couturier-slash–interior designer Alexis Mabille opens the door to his unforgettably glamorous apartment in Paris. And Jessica Gersten orchestrates a Manhattan residence for a homeowner who is part of a multigenerational family of collectors. All are glorious testaments to the rewards of taking the creative path.
