Editor in Chief Jacqueline Terrebonne Unveils the Winter Issue
This edition features 14 rising stars in the art world, seven up-and-coming interior designers you need to know now, plus dynamic residences from Palm Beach to Paris
As an editor, I find nothing more gratifying than celebrating fresh talent. The excitement is twofold, because not only do we get to give emerging creatives a spotlight to kick-start their career, but we also provide our readers with the opportunity to learn about these names before they make it big. This issue is packed with rising stars about to make their mark on the worlds of art and design, and it’s an honor to present so many of them in these pages.
For example, designer Jessica Schuster shows off her striking ability to execute a unique, lively take on the Mediterranean-inspired style so prevalent in Palm Beach, Florida, in our cover story. Each room resounds with the perfect balance between crisp, personality-filled panache and timeless livability. And she’s not the only one bringing us original ideas in the interiors space. In Designers to Watch, we look at seven firms that have caught our eye with their signature styles. Their incredible experience in the field, often accented with relevant work in the art world, made us sit up and take notice. Consider Rob Johansen, whose training as a painter comes across in the moody palette of the West Village townhouse in New York he recently completed.
In our sixth list of emerging artists, we reveal 14 talents poised to become breakout stars in the coming year. Culled from the selections of a jury of esteemed art- and design-world powerhouses, the feature reflects a range of mediums and messages. As a native New Orleanian, Renee Royale, who splits her time between Louisiana and Illinois, produces work that particularly resonates with me, with her swampy landscapes interpreted through an inventive adaptation of the photography process. Just like all the others included, the work radiates with confidence and clarity.
But I must admit what’s most rewarding is realizing someone whom I championed early on has made it really big. Earlier in my career, I pushed hard for the work of Ashe Leandro, which is showcased in this issue’s Curated column, to be published, and I love seeing what a driving force the firm has become since then, especially with its recently released and much buzzed about monograph, Ashe Leandro: Architecture + Interiors (Rizzoli). I know all the talents profiled in these pages are destined for just that kind of greatness as well.
