Dorothy Draper’s Childhood Home in Tuxedo Park Is on the Market for $4 Million

The property was built in 1893 and restored in 2021

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Dorothy Draper’s childhood home in Tuxedo Park is on the market. Listed for $3.995 million, the 8,195-square-foot property features nine bedrooms, seven full baths, and two half baths. The historic abode was built in 1893 and restored in 2021. It sits on 1.4 acres and has a two-car garage and eight fireplaces.

“A truly impressive, full six-year renovation was recently completed, blending the historic charm of this architectural gem with new, modern amenities,” says listing agent Laura Denberg, of Tuxedo Hudson Realty“This property is a storybook of leveled gardens and secret, tucked-away places to sit among the 100-year-old plantings. The four life-size statues imported from France adorn the south lawn and are magical as they are beautiful, representing spring, summer, winter, and fall. They are included with this luxury historic property.”

Located at 82 Lookout Road, the home also includes its own elevator; a gourmet kitchen that was redone in 2019, complete with a Sub-Zero double stainless refrigerator and freezer, three islands made—in part—of Brazilian Calacatta Quartzite, a warming drawer, a Kitchen-Aid full-size dishwasher, a six-burger range with a griddle, a convection oven, a Sub-Zero ice maker, a Wolf double wall oven, a walk-in cool room, radiant heat floors, and Waterstone faucets; and a library with custom cabinetry, a fireplace made of carved soapstone, and a plaster ceiling from a country home in Wales.

Additional features include Hope’s of England windows circa the 1920s, Omnia hardware from Italy, and a fireplace swathed in Delft titles, while the exterior of the home features Bluestone patios, an original French iron canopy hanging above the front door, and a black slate roof originating from Wales.

In addition to this Tuxedo Park property, Draper’s family also owned a townhouse in Manhattan and a summer home in Newport, Rhode Island.

Draper is perhaps best known for designing the interiors of the Greenbrier, a luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The property still exists, with her designs intact. Draper received the highest payment ever given to a decorator for the work she did at the Greenbrier; the renovation cost $4.2 million in 1948, which would be an estimated $55 million today.

A devoted maximalist, Draper often incorporated vibrant colors in her work, as well as elements of Baroque and Rococo design. She helped popularize the design style that is now known as Hollywood Regency.
