When Abigail and Warren Spector married five years ago, they enlisted designer Jeff Lincoln to reimagine their townhouse in New York’s West Village. A fashion veteran, Abigail soon immersed herself in the world of contemporary craft after Lincoln introduced her to creative talents across the city. Studio visits ignited a fervent obsession that quickly developed through countless hours of research and conversations with makers. Her first acquisition, Misha Kahn’s irreverent reinterpretation of a Federal-style mirror, catalyzed a collection that now encompasses works by David Wiseman, Francesca DiMattio, Katie Stout, Roberto Lugo, and Carmen D’Apollonio. Yet the Spectors measure the grouping by more than just its prestige and provenance. “These people have become very important to us,” Abigail says. “The work is just an extension of the relationships.”
Pay it forward: The couple’s passion for contemporary craft inspired them to establish the Spector Craft Prize, which champions emerging American makers through unrestricted awards, mentorships, and a summit at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, this fall. “We hope to get involved in people’s careers early, help them at pivotal moments, and see them evolve,” Abigail says.
