The iconic tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits of Sex and the City will hit the auction block in a sale with Julien’s that features scores of fashion treasures worn by everyone from Princess Diana to Lady Gaga. The timeless three-tiered skirt, which Parker also donned in the first Sex and the City film, is one of the marquee lots in the January 18 sale, dubbed “Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion,” which is set to take place live in Beverly Hills.

In the 25 years since the HBO series debuted, the playful garment has become part of fashion history, helping vault Parker into the pantheon of bonafide style icons—but the tutu’s origins are far more humble. In fact, costume designer Patricia Field plucked the dainty piece from a $5 bin in Manhattan’s Garment District as a backup option for the shot, which was originally supposed to feature Carrie in a Marc Jacobs dress.

The oyster white tutu, which comes with matching satin waistband, has been estimated to sell for between $8,000 and $12,000 and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Field.

Other top lots include a black velvet cocktail dress worn by Princess Diana and made by her favorite designer, Catherine Walker, as well as a 1961 green Givenchy ensemble donned by Grace Kelly. Browse the lots online and discover additional items made famous by Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Cher, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Joan Collins, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, and more. Also included in the sale are collectible pieces from iconic labels like Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garçons, and Thierry Mugler among others.

“Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion” will take place at Julien’s on January 18.
