Originally built in the 1930s, the 42-room Hôtel Les Roches cultivates such an intimacy with the sea that guests can hear the waves breaking gently on the rocks below and savor the salty breezes that carry the aroma of Provençal herbs like rosemary and lavender growing wild. Having just reopened after a top- to-bottom renovation by architect Jean-Baptiste Pietri, this resort, a member of Relais & Châteaux, will be the most talked-about address on the French Riviera this summer.

The sleek but soothing decor combines oak parquet and terrazzo floors, blond wood headboards, curvy chairs and sofas, and a creamy palette accented with petroleum blue. In homage to Postimpressionist painters, including Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, who were inspired during stays in Le Lavandou, contemporary works by artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Ma Desheng, and Loris Cecchini are displayed in the hotel’s public spaces. Michelin-starred chef Antoine Gras serves a seafood menu at L’Oursin, the property’s gastronomic restaurant, which also features a wine list by sommelier Magali Delalex that showcases the great wines of the south of France.
