Aperture Finds a Permanent Home on the Upper West Side
The two-floor, 10,000-square-foot space, which will serve as a hub for collaboration and gathering
On September 18, Aperture will celebrate the opening of its permanent new home on New York’s Upper West Side with the inaugural installation, “Aperture Loves New York.” Curated by Aperture Executive Director Sarah Mesiter, the photographers who have captured the city’s defining moments will fill the interiors of the two-floor, 10,000-square-foot space, which will serve as a hub for collaboration and gathering.
“Our new home marks an exciting chapter for Aperture,” says Meister. “At 380 Columbus, we are creating an open, dynamic space for encountering photography—one that invites dialogue, fosters discovery, and brings us into closer engagement with our community. Rooted in New York yet connected to a global audience through our publications and programs, this space reflects our enduring belief in photography as a powerful tool for understanding the world and one another.”
The Columbus Avenue location, designed by Levenbetts with construction manager Sciame, is directly across from the American Museum of Natural History and offers free admission. The space was designed to adapt to new installations, artist talks, dynamic programming, and rotating presentations. An adjacent bookstore will also host exciting partnerships in support of photography.
“The opening of Aperture’s new home represents a major milestone for our organization and for the field of photography,” says Cathy M. Kaplan, chair of the non-profit’s board. “Aperture is a publisher, but it is also a cultural platform with a legacy that spans more than 70 years. This new space enables us to build upon this history and expand our audiences and activities while remaining committed to nurturing a vibrant culture around photography.”
