An apartment within the former Manhattan mansion of Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American politician and newspaper publisher, is on the market. The $4.3 million listing is at 11 East 73rd Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues, and has three bedrooms and three baths.

Built in the early 1900s and inspired by 17th-century Venetian palaces, the residence is located in apartment 1D and is listed with Eileen Angelo and Max Collins of Sotheby’s International Realty. Amenities include an elevator, a live-in manager, a doorman, hardwood floors and walls, and a granite counter.

“This is truly a one-of-a-kind property and a piece of New York history,” Angelo tells Galerie. “Walking into the Pulitzer Mansion is like walking into a different time, and this apartment exudes the style and opulence of the Gilded Age. One can easily imagine the events that took place there when it was a private home, and it is still the ideal space for sophisticated entertaining.”

Design features of the living room include 20-foot ceilings, detailed plasterwork, massive fluted columns, and an eye-catching chandelier that ties the space together. Other highlights include an oversized bay window that allows copious amounts of natural light to permeate the dwelling, ornamental moldings, and a wood-burning fireplace.

The home’s primary bedroom overlooks the aforementioned living room and features its own dressing room and en suite bath. Two secondary bedrooms, which also have their own en suite baths, can be used as spaces for guests, offices, or private sitting rooms, all the while maintaining the timeless integrity of the historic dwelling.

Stanford White of the famed architectural firm McKim, Mead & White designed the residence for Pulitzer, who lived here with his family from 1904 until his passing in 1911. The family maintained ownership of this property until 1934, and it was later converted into a co-op, with 14 apartments in total.
