New Met Gala 2027 Theme Revealed
“ExtraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday” replaces the previously canceled John Galliano exhibit
On Thursday, the 2027 Met Gala’s new theme was revealed as “ExtraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” with the annual high-fashion fundraiser set to take place on May 3. The announcement comes a little over two months after The Metropolitan Museum of Art was forced to cancel “John Galliano: Horizons” following outcry over his past controversies.
“The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears,” said Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. “A pair of jeans, a white shirt, or a sweatshirt can hold traces of a life—the habits, memories, and attachments that make something our own. Designers work with that familiarity, revealing unexpected possibilities within forms and materials we think we already know. The exhibition invites us to discover how much imagination the everyday can hold, and how looking again might change what we value and care for.”
Following the gala, the Costume Institute’s exhibition will open on May 9, featuring works from the museum’s own collection paired with loans and new acquisitions that explore how designers rework familiar garments, everyday objects, and common materials.
The exhibition will open first with a gallery devoted to garments from Jun Takahashi’s autmun/winter 2024-25 collection for Undercover. Two main pillars, “Familial Forms” and “Common Matter,” will create an ongoing dialogue throughout. “Familial Forms” will examine how designers reinvent clothing, revealing how changes in scale, material, and context can unsettle how each garment is typically considered. “Common Matter” explores how designers construct clothing from commonplace materials and recognizable objects. Here, the clothing will be separated into paper, plastic, and material, paired with everyday objects to show how material properties and histories are reimagined in new designs.
The exhibition will close with garments from Kunihiko Morinaga’s collections for Anrealage from spring/summer 2009, autumn/winter 2009-10, autumn/winter 2020-21, and spring/summer 2021. Additional highlights throughout include jeans by Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta, a 1992 dress by Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons, a 1998–99 ensemble by Issey Miyake, and more.
