Editor in Chief Jacqueline Terrebonne Shares Highlights from Galerie’s Fall 2024 Issue
The Modern Glamour issue spotlights artists, designers, and visionary women in the art world including Rachel Feinstein, David Rockwell, William T. Georgis, and Elsa Peretti
Being bold today doesn’t require quite as much bravery as it once did. It seems as if there are no limits to how brazen people can be. Now, what is the exceptional move is doing it with finesse. It’s the balance of those opposites I find worthy of true praise, and this fall issue is stacked with shining examples of people who know how to walk that tightrope.
Take the extraordinary group profiled in our special section on “Women Shaping the Art World.” These diverse talents, who work across many fields within the space, are navigating their way through unchartered territory with both creativity and conviction. From the advancements Melissa Chiu has made over the past decade as the director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to the thoughtful architecture Annabelle Selldorf devised for the update of the Frick Collection, everything they do is permeated with intelligence, style, and courage.
And certainly, artist Rachel Feinstein, on our cover and the subject of our studio visit, titled “Art & Artifice,” is among that coterie of ingenious females. She ceaselessly fascinates us with her poignant takes on fairy tales and happy endings.
Beyond these exemplary women, we also look at two audacious yet thoughtful visionaries celebrating important anniversaries: There’s Elsa Peretti, who began her collaboration with Tiffany & Co. 50 years ago. Turning to Japanese culture for inspiration when the collection launched, the jewelry designer created pieces that did the unthinkable, including mixing precious metals and stones with silk cord, something she learned could be as valuable as gold from artisans in the Far East. And then there’s Rockwell Group principal David Rockwell, who over the past 40 years designed the hotels, restaurants, theatrical sets, and more that have launched trends while also enduring the test of time.
In this issue, each interior embraces our mission to “Live Artfully” by striking the perfect equilibrium between bravado and elegance that suits both the homeowners’ personal tastes as well as the spirit of its locale. The properties profiled, crafted by Damien Langlois-Meurrine in Paris, William T. Georgis in Miami, Ben Pentreath in the English countryside, and Lucien Rees Roberts in New York, are each a study in this subtle art. And what could be bolder than that?
