Barbra Streisand’s Former Manhattan Townhouse Lists for $18 Million
The award-winning actress owned the lavish Art Deco residence, located on the Upper East Side, in the 1970s
A nearly century-old Upper East Side townhouse once owned by Barbra Streisand has hit the market for just under $18 million. Listed by Cathy Franklin of Corcoran, the beautifully preserved Art Deco residence was completed in 1930 and features original details envisioned by architect Harry Allan Jacobs, known for crafting the landmark Seville Hotel downtown, now The James New York NoMad.
Streisand is one of the few Hollywood entertainers to have earned an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy throughout her decades-long career. She bought the six-story residence on East 80th Street in 1970, just a year after winning Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance in Funny Girl (1968). “I’ve never wanted to live in a house,” she told the New York Times following the purchase. “But I’m going ahead with it anyway.”
In spite of her proclamation, the A-lister offloaded the ornate home just two years later. The quick sale was presumably not due to a lack of space: The 25-foot-wide dwelling boasts a whopping eight bedrooms and five baths across nearly 9,200 square feet. It’s also perfect for entertaining, equipped with a grand living area, formal dining room, a library, and a pair of kitchens.
Among the luxe amenities are six wood-burning fireplaces (which have since been banned in new construction), an elevator servicing all six floors, a private garage, and central air. In addition to a generous rear garden, there are three balconies as well as a planted rooftop terrace ideal for al fresco entertaining.
48 East 80th Street is listed for $17.95 million with Cathy Franklin of Corcoran. See more photos below.
