“My work is a free-falling exploration about what it means to be fully human in the world,” says artist Firelei Báez, whose practice blends elements of folklore, fantasy, and feminism in large-scale, energetic canvases. For Galerie’s Spring 2024 Issue, the Dominican Republic–born talent opens up her Brooklyn studio as she gears up for her first U.S. museum survey, which debuts at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston on April 4. Below, in a video by SK Studio, Báez talks about her creative philosophy and gives a look at her workspace in Red Hook.
