Life Imitates Art: 4 Beautiful Examples
No. 12, 1951, one of Mark Rothko’s iconic abstractions, seems to channel deep human emotion, if not transcendental realms, with its diaphanous fields of luminous color. A master of subtle beauty, Tomas Maier blocked out this Bottega Veneta coat in rich shades of terra-cotta and tangerine double cashmere.

At the turn of the last century, a portrait by John Singer Sargent was a coveted marker of status for society elites. His 1892 painting of London hostess Mrs. Hugh Hammersley brilliantly captures the opulence of her gold-trimmed dress and refined surroundings. More is so much more when it comes to Christian Louboutin’s Babouchkaflor velvet mules, which are bedecked with a profusion of flowers, sequins, and ruffled trim—not to mention the glitter-encrusted heel.

Keith Haring’s 1982–84 painting Red (detail), a riot of intense color and movement, features some of the artist’s signature abstracted forms, including dancing figures, dogs, and snakes. Celebrating its 45th year in Manhattan, the Italian jewelry firm Bulgari recently unveiled its opulently renovated Fifth Avenue flagship as well as a special collection called From Rome to New York City. One of its standout pieces is the Serpenti Bracelet, a white-gold coil set with coral, lapis lazuli, pear-cut brilliant diamonds, and pavé diamonds.

Tapping into childhood joy, Jeff Koons’s “Celebration” series renders toys and festive objects in candy-colored paintings and as monumental sculptures, including Tulips (1995–2004), his stainless-steel take on flower balloons. A rainbow bezel of 32 multicolored sapphires, eight green tsavorites, and a triangular diamond at 12 o’clock adds punchy spirit to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40, an elegant workhorse with a high-performance elastomer band.
