10 Spectacular Jewelry Moments from the 2024 Met Gala
Discover the dazzling pieces worn by Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Ayo Edebiri
The annual Met Gala, held to herald the arrival of a new costume exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is always a major fashion flex for the social, cultural, political, and artistic elite in attendance. Last night, many such guests gathered to celebrate “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the latest exhibition from the Met’s Costume Institute, which opens to the public on Friday, May 10.
This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” emerged from a 1962 short story by the same name by J.G. Ballard. It was also a springtime-perfect allusion to the Met’s costume exhibition, which highlights rarely-seen garments and objects from the museum’s archives.
Fashion-wise, floral details were in abundance, as were avian motifs (on gowns, lapels and at least one face) and butterfly inspirations. There was also lots and lots of Loewe, one of the event’s sponsors.
With such lush, pictorial, and richly detailed fashion to set the tone, creative jewelry moments popped up on the red carpet (that was actually off-white with airbrushed green edges to match the theme) here there and everywhere, not unlike an enchanted forest filled fairy-dusted flowers.
Ahead, some of our favorites.
Ayo Edebiri x Boucheron
Beloved for her role in The Bear, the actress, comedian, and television writer wore a Loewe gown featuring hand-painted floral lace and appliqués, including some blooms pinned in her hair. To complement the watercolor hues on display, Edebiri wore Boucheron High Jewelry, specifically the Bleu Infini pendant earrings set with pear-shaped aquamarines, and a ring designed with a pavé diamond hummingbird touching down on a massive oval shaped aquamarine.
Chloe Sevigny x Ana Khouri
The onetime It Girl actress continues to be admired for her edgy, indie style and the 2024 Met Gala was no exception. Perhaps a smidge outdone by her “mourning hair” she wore gold-and-diamond Ana Khouri jewels—and a gold-accented minaudiere made of Brazilian rosewood—with her custom Dilara Findikoglu gown. Khouri is known for agenda-setting, avant-garde and completely gorgeous jewelry designs—the necklace on Sevigny, a majestic collar in 18k yellow gold set with a with a 21-ct. diamond, is an exemplar of the jewelry designer’s singular aesthetic.
Alia Bhatt x Sabyasachi
The British actress was enchanting in a mint green Sabyasachi couture sari (assembled by its own “drape artist”) trimmed with glass fringe and embroidered with pink flowers fashioned from a mélange of silk floss, beads, sequins and semi-precious stones. Such opulent embellishments required Sabyasachi jewels of a similar intensity: Set with antique diamonds and enormous pastel tourmalines and morganites, the selection included a head piece, massive earrings and a dazzling ring party, one for each hand.
Jennifer Lopez x Tiffany & Co.
Wearing a scintillating, crystal-covered Schiaparelli sheath, the multi-talented style icon—and one of the evening’s cohosts—wore an array of Tiffany & Co. jewels from the 2024 Blue Book. Adorned in more than 100 carats of diamonds, her Tiffany Celéste necklace (with a diamond centerpiece weighing more than 20 cts.) was the undeniable star of her butterfly-inspired look. She complemented it with Tiffany Celéste earrings, a bracelet, and ring, all set in platinum and 18k gold. And there was a surprise pop of color in the form of a Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany Bird on a Rock ring centering a fancy intense yellow diamond joined by white diamonds and pink sapphires.
Uma Thurman x Fred Leighton
Talk about a Blue Monday! The actress wore a custom periwinkle silk Tory Burch gown—inspired by the American Xerces Blue, an extinct butterfly—with a fluffy cloud of pink and purple butterfly elements hovering on her neckline and shoulders. Fred Leighton gets credit for the perfectly matching jewels, including an Art Deco aquamarine and diamond ring and drop earrings joined by a 1950s diamond bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels.
Sarah Jessica Parker x Briony Raymond New York
Was it the silvery Richard Quinn garden-party dress with its charming hoop skirt or the large horsehair-ensconced Philip Treacy hat placed just so that made the actress’s look one of the evening’s most memorable? It was a charmer by all counts but we’re also very into the jewelry: a pearl sautoir, Art Deco diamond earrings the size of lime wedges from Briony Raymond New York and a Marlo Laz 3 ct. diamond ring, plus pieces from Parker’s personal collection.
Gigi Hadid x Chopard
Tendrilled green vines meandered down the model/entrepreneur’s white Thom Browne ball gown, with its ruffles trimmed in black ribbon—and yellow roses in various states of bloom. The canary hue clearly inspired her suite of Chopard jewels, which included a necklace, earrings, and a ring, all accented with more than 65.31 cts. t.w. yellow diamonds—and white diamonds galore
Demi Moore x Cartier
Fanning out from her shoulders like peacock plumage (only in repurposed vintage archival wallpaper and sculpted silk and velvet), the veteran actress’s Harris Reed gown was actually inspired by the Cartier Nature Sauvage Chloris necklace and earrings she paired with it. The jewels are strong on emeralds—a flash of green “ivy” in the context of this variegated pink-flower fashion creation, according to Reed. In a press release, Cartier noted that the Chloris jewels are meant to capture the beauty of the natural world, with stones that appear to be “caught in a vigorous movement,” like a dandelion blowing in the wind.
Omar Apollo x Loewe, De Beers
The young singer songwriter is a Loewe brand ambassador and worked with designer Jonathan Anderson on his custom suit. The jacket lapels were detailed with neatly placed, extra-large bugle beads made of aluminum. Some might have mistaken the colorful elements, dancing like notes on a staff, for gemstone brooches. In fact, these, too, were Loewe—crystal floral appliqués based on the work of the artist Lynda Benglis. The actual jewels Apollo wore with this look: De Beers diamond stud earrings, cocktail rings, and a bracelet.
Cara Delevingne x Vrai
The model/actress joined singer/songwriter/dancer FKA Twigs and singer Ed Sheeran on the carpet, each wearing custom-made Stella McCartney looks. Delevingne’s was a two-piece garment featuring a remarkable hooded top encrusted with diamonds from Vrai, a purveyor of lab-grown diamond engagement rings and fashion jewelry. Knowing that McCartney favors cruelty-free and sustainable materials, maybe she’ll revisit this type of embellishment in the future. Diamonds are always welcome on the red carpet.
